Research themes:
1.1 Ecosystem resilience and dynamics of biogeochemical processes
1.2 Causes and consequences of changing biodiversity
1.3 Food web structure and dynamics
1.4 Multilevel impacts of hazardous substances
Strategic objective 2: Meeting the multifaceted challenges in linking the Baltic Sea with its coast and catchment (SRA: str. 34-35)
Research themes: 2.1 Natural and human-induced in catchment land cover patterns, including the role of e.g. agriculture, forestry and urbanisation
2.2 The role of the coastal systems in the dynamics of the Baltic Sea
Strategic objective 3: Enhancing sustainable use of coastal and marine goods and services of the Baltic Sea (SRA: str. 39-40)
Research themes:
3.3 Improving stock assessments and resolving spatial heterogeneity and temporal dynamics of the Baltic Sea fish stocks
3.4 Evaluation framework for fisheries management
Strategic objective 4: Improving the capabilities of the society to respond to the current and future challenges directed to the Baltic Sea region (SRA: str. 41-42)

4.1 Governance structures, policy performance and policy instruments
Strategic objective 5: Developing improved and innovative observation and data management systems, tools and methodologies for marine information needs in the Baltic Sea region (SRA: str. 44-45)

5.1 Developing and improving scientific basis for integrated monitoring programmes for continuous assessment of ecological status and human pressures

Każda propozycja projektu winna zawierać temat przewodni oraz od 2 do 4 tematów dodatkowych spośród tematów przewidzianych w danym konkursie (patrz SRA, str 47).
Budżet 1-szego konkursu: do 40 milionów Euro. Wielkość zgłaszanych projektów do 4 milionów Euro.
