Sabellides borealis Sars, 1856

Distinguishing characteristics
Paleae fine and short.
Three branchiae of each group with fused bases, the 4th one free and little behind.
Thorax with 11 pairs of neuropodia.

Species description
Prostomium with two eyespots. Branchiae short, branchial groups well separated. Three branciae of each group with fused bases, the fourth one free and little behind. Paleae fine and short, smaller than normal notochaete. 13 thoracic segments with notopodia with capillary chaetae, the posterior 11 ones also with neuropodia with uncini. Twelve unicigerous abdominal segments. Posterior thoracic and all abdominal segments with a small cirrus at upper edge of each neuropodium. Pygidium with two lateral cirri. Tube – a thin layer of secretion incrusted with mud.

Size
Up to 50 mm long.

Color
Alive pale with greenish gills.
In alcohol yellowish pink to yellowish grey.

Habitat
On silt and mixed bottoms. 30-350 m.

Mobility
Sedentary.

Feeding
Surface deposit feeder.
Facultative suspension feeder.

Life cycle

Distribution
Pan-arctic shelf species, West Greenland, Labrador, Canadian Arctic, Siberian Arctic, Bering Sea, Canadian Pacific, East Greenland, Svalbard, Iceland, Norwegian coast from Varanger to Møre.
