A very common benthic bivalve mollusk of arctic seas.

Size
Up to 100 mm, usually 50-70 mm.

Color
Gray or yellowish-gray to brown, shiny.
Young individuals with zigzag lines along growth lines.

Habitat
On different types of sediments.

Depth
Mainly sublitoral.

Feeding
Suspension feeder.

Life cycle
Pelagic larvae.

Distribution
Widespread boreal-arctic.
