Shelf-Basin Exchange at the Margins of the Arctic: IPY and Beyond

The U.S. Western Arctic Shelf-Basin Interactions (SBI) Project Office and the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences are pleased to co-sponsor the 4th Shelf-Basin Interactions Pan-Arctic Meeting to be held in Sopot, Poland, 26-29 September 2006 entitled "Shelf-Basin Exchange at the Margins of the Arctic: IPY and Beyond". The meeting will be held at the Hotel Haffner, with special events at the nearby IOPAS facility.

The SBI Pan-Arctic meetings are designed to encourage open discussion of Arctic science in a forum that will foster international collaboration on topics relevant to providing a clear understanding of the physical and biogeochemical connections between the Arctic shelves, slopes and deep basin. The focus of the 2006 pan-Arctic meeting is to foster information exchange and collaboration on ongoing and planned shelf-basin exchange relevant science within the upcoming International Polar Year (IPY) and beyond.

Travel and Accommodation

Sopot can be reached by plane (the Gdansk international airport maintains daily connections with European and Polish airports, see website: www.airport.gdansk.pl), ferry (Karlskrona, Nynashamn), train or bus. The meeting venue and Sopot hotels can be reached from the airport by taxi. Public transportation is also available. Take bus no. 110 to the railway station in Gdansk-Wrzeszcz. Take either the city train (SKM) towards Gdynia or bus no. 122 to Sopot.

Sopot is a small town wonderfully located at the Gulf of Gdańsk which is placed in the south part of the Baltic Sea. It has beautiful beaches, forests and parks. Its most known architecture is the pier based on wooden construction, which is the longest pier of this type in Europe (511.5 m long and 10 m wide).
