Preface

What is the supplement OCEANOLOGIA 40 (S)?

The supplement OCEANOLOGIA 40 (S) is a guide to the papers published in OCEANOLOGIA from 1971 (volume 1) to 1996 volume 38 (4). It contains abstracts of original articles and communications in their original versions (with linguistic corrections where necessary). These have been classified into biological oceanology (B), chemical oceanology (C), geological oceanology (G) and physical oceanology (P). It also contains a subject index, an author's index and a list of life histories, published in OCEANOLOGIA, of well-known Polish oceanologists. The supplement thus reviews the growth of oceanology in the light of papers published in Poland from 1971 to 1996. It is issued to commemorate the United Nations Year of the Ocean 1998, the Millenium of our regional capital Gdansk and the 25 years of OCEANOLOGIA as a scientific journal.

A brief history of OCEANOLOGIA

OCEANOLOGIA was originally the organ of the Polish National Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (Polish SCOR), aiming above all to publish the achievements of oceanology in Poland. Its first Editor-in-chief was Professor Stanislaw Szymborski, the then Director of the Marine Station in Sopot, which in time was to become the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Sopot. From Volume 17 onwards, the Editor-in-chief has been Professor Jerzy Dera, who is the current Director of the Institute of Oceanology of the PAS in Sopot. From 1973 to 1987 (volumes 2–25) Barbara Szczutkowska was the editorial secretary, playing a major part in the journal's growth. The format and layout of OCEANOLOGIA have changed gradually over the years. Initially serving Polish requirements and the needs of Polish scientists, the journal was printed and published using the resources then available. In recent years it has emerged as a Quarterly Journal of Basic Research in Marine Sciences with an international editorial board and an international circulation. It is open to authors from all over the world. Abstracts of OCEANOLOGIA currently appear in the following abstracts: Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA); Environmental Abstracts – Bowker Publishing; Marine, Oceanographic and Fresh Water Resources; Meteorological and Geoastro-physical Abstracts; Oceanographic Literature Review – Elsevier/Geo Abstracts; Zoological Record Serial Sources. By maintaining the standard of the papers at a high level and issuing each number at regular quarterly intervals, the Editors hope to make OCEANOLOGIA one of the leading scientific journals in marine science in Europe.
